Merrill Parke’s Estate Sale

October 15, 1849

Merrill Parke, 40, died of cholera in 1849, a victim of a national epidemic.  He had no will.  Thus, under the laws at the time, his estate – including personal and househopld goods – were inventoried and sold at a public auction.  His wife, Susannah Gentry Parke, did not automatically inherit his estate, thus she had to buy her own belongings at the sale.
